Laser Retinopexy

An in-office laser procedure used to seal retinal tears, preventing them from progressing to a retinal detachment.

What it is

Laser retinopexy uses a focused beam of laser energy to create small, controlled spots around a retinal tear or area of weakness. As these spots heal, they form a scar that anchors the retina to the underlying tissue — much like spot welds — and prevents fluid from getting under the retina.

When it's used

Laser retinopexy is most often used for:

  • Retinal tears
  • Small holes or breaks in the peripheral retina
  • Areas of lattice degeneration considered high-risk
  • Boundary treatment around small, localized retinal detachments

What to expect

The procedure is performed in the office. The eye is numbed with drops. You'll see bright flashes of light during the treatment; some patients describe mild discomfort.

After the procedure

Most patients return to normal activities the same day. There are typically no specific precautions; your retina specialist will let you know if your individual case requires any.

Urgent evaluation

Symptomatic retinal tears should be evaluated promptly. If you've been told you have a tear or are experiencing new flashes and floaters, call our scheduling line — we see urgent referrals as soon as possible.
