Surgery

Certain eye conditions require surgical intervention to repair the defect.

All of our surgeries are performed at Crouse Hospital.

Vitrectomy

A vitrectomy is performed to remove the vitreous of the eye. This may be required because of severe bleeding, injury or infection, macular hole, retinal detachment or macular pucker. Surgery is done to remove blood, debris and scar tissue and to release traction on the retina. The retinal surgeon performs the procedure through a microscope and uses special lenses to see the back of the eye. Tiny incisions are made in the sclera where the surgeon inserts microsurgical instruments into the eye in order to repair damage. A vitrectomy is often performed along with other procedures which depend on the needs of a particular eye.

Scleral Buckle

Retinal detachments may be treated by application of a scleral buckle. A scleral buckle is surgically applied to the outside of the eye on the sclera where it presses in on the eye and decreases the traction on the retina and allows it to lay back against the wall of the eye. The buckle itself is a piece of rubber, silicone, or semi-hard plastic. It may be only applied to the area of the detachment or it may encircle the eye like a ring.
